Mining Solutions

We’ve been delivering mining solutions with safety and expertise across North America for over a decade.

For over a decade, we have successfully delivered large, multi-disciplinary projects for public and private sector clients across the United States and Canada, safely resolving complex challenges for the mining industry.

Our extensive experience supports mining customers across a wide range of services. We have assisted companies that mine materials such as potash, phosphate, gold, copper, lead, zinc, and aggregates.

While a portion of our work involves remediating and restoring once-active mine sites, we also support active mining operations committed to protecting communities and repurposing their assets for broader purposes. We apply our geotechnical and specialty civil construction services to these ongoing operations, constructing barrier walls to contain mine tailings and protect groundwater as well as cutoff walls to minimize dewatering efforts. Our successful efforts have resulted in a high rate of repeat business in the mining industry.

At inactive mining facilities, we perform full-scale remediation to mitigate mine impacts, protect community water sources, and repurpose and reclaim sites for future use. Our experience includes navigating harsh weather conditions, complex geological settings, and difficult-to-access locations, all while adhering to strict safety standards to minimize adverse health or environmental impacts.

Mine reclamation involves safeguarding communities from potential adverse environmental effects of ongoing mining operations, with an end goal of returning mined lands to a beneficial end use. Our work spans multiple facets of mine reclamation – support for active mining operations, environmental remediation, and the restoration and repurposing of former mined lands and assets.

Many of our long-time mining customers rely on us for our slurry wall and specialty civil construction capabilities in support of their active aggregate mining operations. With a goal of minimizing adverse impacts to both the environment and business operations, our hydraulic control technologies, typically slurry walls, decrease dewatering needs inside the active mine site, while preventing the runoff of materials outside the mine site.

In addition to hydraulic control services, we also support overall site development and maintenance including the construction of borrow sources and quarries, repository construction and closure, liner installation, and ultimately, demolition and site restoration. Oftentimes, we serve these customers through collaborative contracting models, or alternative delivery, where we partner with an engineer to provide preconstruction services such as early contractor involvement, constructability reviews, cost estimating, and more.

We’re proud to partner with companies who share our mission to leave the planet better than we found it and make an impact on current and future generations. In addition to safeguarding operations while providing critical resources, they also work proactively to plan for the future restoration of mined sites once operations are complete.

Featured Project Experience

Our mine remediation services can be applied to both active and inactive mining operations.

For active mining operations, mitigating potential water pollution from discharged mine effluent and tailings impoundments is of critical importance. To help mining companies manage this, we install cutoff walls to prevent material seepage and avoid adverse environmental and community impacts.

For closed mining sites, rehabilitation of the land is the end goal. Sometimes, this requires mine remediation services to demolish infrastructure and treat or remove impacted soil, sediments, groundwater, and surface water. Depending on the site location and conditions, this can also include the installation of hydraulic control structures to protect nearby waterways from mine tailings or other materials. When treated properly, this land can be restored and reused for a variety of purposes.

Notably, we remediated what was once the largest operating copper mine in the United States, mitigating the former mining operation’s impacts to restore the watershed and riparian habitat for future beneficial use. Located deep in the Cascade Mountains, the site required access by barge and a significant amount of remedial work over six construction seasons.

Among the services provided were the demolition of structures, regrading and capping of mine tailings, and the rerouting and reconstruction of waterways to mitigate downstream impacts to the community’s water supply. To further protect the water supply, we installed a slurry cutoff wall and other groundwater management systems. Today, the village adjacent to the mine site is a vibrant retreat for visitors and nature enthusiasts.
