Surface Impoundment Closure
CCR surface impoundments hold accumulated CCRs and liquids. The relatively shallow ponds are used to store, treat, and dispose of the accumulated wastes. When ready for final closure, utilities can either implement a clean closure, where all CCR material and affected soils are removed, or a closure-in-place, which involves dewatering liquids in the impoundment and placing a final, protective cover over CCR left in the impoundment.
Either method requires certain risk mitigation strategies and an understanding of the chemistry and makeup of CCRs. While many civil contractors are capable of transporting waste from point A to point B, to safely deliver these closure projects you need a partner well-versed in environmental risk mitigation strategies.Our subject matter experts understand the thixotropic nature of wet CCRs found in surface impoundments and have successfully performed both closure methods.
